Siena Root: Root Jam
Transubstans Records (TRANS088)

Root Jam is the first live album by Swedish blues/classic/psych/prog rock group Siena Root, who have been around since the 90’s. This 90-minute-long collects together in a fine way the band’s whole history from the debut album to the new and previously unreleased stuff. There are also as many as nine guests and ex-members featured like female singer Sanya with her powerful voice. The band’s sonic palette has always been formed by a pleasant mix of late 60’s and early 70’s classic hard rock, blues, psychedelic jamming and Eastern, ethnic vibes, and the band really can cook up a tasty brew from these ingredients.

This double CD has 12 tracks and the longest ones are over ten minutes in length. We’ve got hard rocking guitars, great bass riffs, skillful drumming, excellent organ playing, superb vocals, violin, flute as well as sitar. The band has really good songs but I think they still might be at their best on the solo and jam parts that can get pretty wild. There are also many more peaceful tracks included on this album and especially the ones with sitar are very enjoyable. There are also enough psychedelic vibes to keep things interesting for me too. One of the best pieces is the album’s last, atmospheric and long instrumental “Reverberations” that brings to mind Uriah Heep but also has for example some reggae influences. I guess this band is at their best live, so this album is a very welcome addition to their catalogue. Root Jam is now also available on vinyl on Headspin Records.
